How to select the correct motorcycle oils?

The combined motorcycle population in ASEAN is the largest in the world, where one can concurrently find the oldest and the most advanced motorcycle models. It is also the most common transportation mode in ASEAN countries. As such, selecting the correct oil is an important task for motorcycle owners. In this article, we will try to assist owners to select the right oil for their motorcycles.
Below are some tips to select the correct oil for motorcycles:
1. Viscosity grades – always start by selecting correct viscosity grades. Typical viscosity grades are SAE 10W-30, 10W-40 and 20W-50. The manufacturer will indicate the recommended viscosity grade in the owner’s manual. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation to maintain your motorcycle warranty and engine life.
2. Typical motorcycle engine oils apply API and ACEA specifications for gasoline engine oils. Unfortunately, not all gasoline engine oils are suitable for motorcycle applications. Gasoline engine oils are generally lower viscosity such as SAE 0W-20 and 5W-30 which may result in clutch slippage, power loss
and transmission gear pitting and wear for motorcycle applications. Japanese motorcycle manufacturers jointly developed the JASO T903 standard to assist motorcycle owners to select the right oil. Today, JASO T903 standard is generally acknowledged as the global motorcycle oil standards. SELECT the correct JASO specification for your motorcycle! 3. Is a Synthetic motorcycle oil better? Most lubricant marketers will claim that synthetic motorcycle oils can last longer resulting in a longer oil change interval. It is important to note that high quality synthetic engine oils are formulated with high quality performance additives and synthetic base oils, as such it is a very expensive engine oil! Does it bring better performance? Not necessarily! Most of the time, high quality mineral-based motorcycle engine oils with API SN specifications can out-perform the lower quality fully synthetic motorcycle engine oils with API SJ or SL specifications. 4. Lastly, WHEN IN DOUBT, refer to the manufacturer owner’s manual. The owner’s manual will specify the recommended engine oil for your motorcycle. A good motorcycle engine oil ensures a longer engine life and a trouble-free riding experience.
