Most motorcycles use the same oil to lubricate the engine and clutch. The oil must provide the correct frictional properties or else the clutch can slip. Since passenger car and light-duty truck oils often contain friction modifiers to improve fuel economy, they are not recommended for wet-clutch applications. You need to use a JASO MA or JASO MA2 oil.
What is the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (JASO) standard?
The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE) developed the JASO T 904 standard to classify oils by their ability to provide good wet-clutch lubrication and performance, helping owners to select the right oil for their motorcycles.
In 1998, JASO introduced a rating system for motorcycle oils. Previously, the majority of motorcycle oils utilized automotive oils as a base. As automobile manufacturers began requiring more friction modifiers be used in their vehicles, these formulations caused clutch slippage and gearbox pitting. JASO specified four grades: JASO MA, MA1, MA2 and MB. The first three (with the designation of MA) signify that the oil is intended for a four-stroke motorcycle with an oil sump for the engine, gearbox and clutch. MA fluid is non-friction modified. If an oil is rated at MA, it means the oil’s test results were between MA1 and MA2 standards.
JASO MA – This was the standard for single unit engine where the wet clutch, gearbox and engine used the same oil. JASO-MA oils do not contain friction modifiers. JASO MB – This lower standard was for motorcycles that use separate oils for the engine, clutch and gearbox (e.g Harley Davidson’s and BMW’s). Newer generation of Japanese branded scooters use JASO MB oils. In 2006, JASO MA was further broken down into JASO MA1 and JASO MA2. JASO MA2 oils offer increased frictional performance, allowing oil manufacturers to fine-tune their formulations for added performance in specific areas, depending on the application.
