Engine oil is an important component to ensure the normal operation of automobile engine, which plays the role of lubrication, cooling and cleaning. Choosing a suitable engine oil can keep our car in the best working condition. Understanding the meaning of those standards on the oil packaging and select the right engine oil is very important for car owners.
The Society of American Engineers (SAE) has developed a grading system that determines the viscosity of oil based on multi-grade and the single-grade. This system is ordered by a set of numbers: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 60. They let you know how thick the oil is, and what temperature it is best suited for. When the letter “W” is placed after the numbers, it refers to winter, and means the winter viscosity for the oil.
When we go to a workshop for oil change, the mechanic will likely recommend an oil that state 0W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40 and 10W-30 on the oil packaging label. What exactly do these words mean? This actually represents the standard set by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers).
The symbol “W” represents winter. The number before “W” is its low-temperature viscosity, the lower the number the better is it low-temperature fluidity and the applicable minimum temperature. The number after the horizontal bar represents the higher the applicable maximum temperature and can withstand the
higher working temperature. The higher the value, the greater the viscosity at high temperature, and the better the lubrication performance at high temperature, which is why 30 or 40 oil is generally recommended for turbocharged engines because the temperature of the turbocharged engine tends to go up to 400 - 500°C. When the engine is running at high speed, if the oil with low viscosity cannot attach to the moving parts, it is unable to play the role of lubricating the moving parts in the engine. higher working temperature.
