Latest Gasoline engine oil specifications – API SP and ILSAC GF-6

The latest ILSAC GF-6 and API SP specifications was introduced on May 1, 2020. This article will provide a simple view of these new standards and its benefits.
Due to increased legislative controls, automotive car manufacturers collaborated with API to develop a new performance standard capable of meeting the needs of different current and future gasoline engines.
Below we will provide you with a better understanding of ILSAC GF-6 and API SP. ILSAC GF-6 - GF-6 will replace the GF-5 category and is divided into two separate sub-categories:
1. GF-6A: Fully backward-compatible for older vehicles that previously used GF-5 oils.
2. GF-6B: Covers the new, lower-viscosity oil grade OW-16 and will NOT be backward-compatible in most cases (unless specified by the car manufacturers).
API SP is the API’s newest service category for gasoline engine oil. ILSAC GF-6 applies to the fuel-efficient viscosity grades, while API SP applies to those heavier viscosity grades like 10W40 and 20W50.
API SP will be fully backward-compatible with previous API service categories, including API SN PLUS, SN, SM, SL or SJ.
The important benefits of GF-6 and API SP engine oils include: 1. Decreased greenhouse gas emissions 2. Improved fuel economy 3. Increased ability for OEMs to comply with environmental regulations 4. Improved wear protection, especially for newer engine technologies 5. Reduced sludge formation and varnish deposits for start-stop engines 6. Protection from the LSPI phenomenon in TGDI engines POLO ProMax 0W20 & 0W30 and POLO SYNMax 5W30 are fully synthetic motor oils with robust additive technology exceeds the new industry standards and are designed to protect the unique needs of today’s high-revving, high-performance engines even under extreme conditions.
